AREAS OF EXPERTISE

We are here to help you navigate through venous and arterial clotting disorders, bleeding and bruising disorders to autoimmune conditions and pregnancy-related concerns…

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

VENOUS AND ARTERIAL CLOTTING DISORDERS

Diagnosis and management of:

  • Provoked, unprovoked or cancer associated venous thrombosis.
  • Venous thrombosis in “unusual” vascular beds (cerebral venous, upper limb, portal vein and splanchnic).
  • Thrombosis in patients with liver and/or kidney disease.
  • Anti-phospholipid syndrome (APLS)
  • Arterial thrombotic disorders (APLS and other complex thrombotic disorders).
BRUISING AND BLEEDING DISORDERS

Expert diagnosis in Von Willebrand disease, rare inherited factor deficiencies and haemophilia, acquired factor deficiencies, platelet bleeding disorders and thrombocytopenia which due to their heterogeneous clinical presentations and requirement for expert testing and interpretation are often missed or misdiagnosed by other practitioners.

AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS
  • Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)
  • Auto-immune haemolytic anaemias
PREGNANCY

Diagnosis and management of:

  • Venous thrombotic risk assessments in pregnancy (in patients with known or suspected inherited thrombophilia).
  • Treatment of DVT and PTE in pregnancy.
  • Anaemia and thrombocytopenia detected during pregnancy.
  • Von Willebrand disease and haemophilia carriers in pregnancy (in collaboration with Haemophilia centres where appropriate).
INVESTIGATIONS
  • Low blood counts
    • Macro-, normo-, microcytic anaemias
    • Leucopenia (especially neutropenia)
    • Thrombocytopenia (and pancytopenia)
  • High blood counts
    • Erythrocytosis (primary vs. secondary causes)
    • Leucocytosis (especially lymphocytosis)
    • Thrombocytosis (primary vs. secondary causes)
  • Investigation and treatment of patients with iron storage disorders (haemachromatosis)
PERI-OPERATIVE STRATEGIES

Consultative advice:

  • For patients with abnormal blood counts, known or suspected bleeding and thrombotic disorders or who may be on medications that might pre-dispose to peri-operative bleeding (anti-coagulants and anti-thrombotics).

Examples listed above encompass commonly encountered consultation questions and do not reflect the breadth of clinical practice.
